The customer service at Xchange is horrendous.
IME, the two cheapest companies for landline service I've seen so far for NYC  are Selectel (it seems that they're an agent for multiple companies, but they they nevertheless seem to have cheap options) and Telzeq communications (also an agent, but I got a very cheap plan with them on Verizon, and I haven't found that anywhere else, including at Verizon themselves).

Both companies IINM are frum yidden.
They may be agents for companies that include Xchange, however the difference is that you don't have to wait on hold for an hour...

Disclosure: I am not affiliated with any of the aforementioned companies/agents, I don't know anyone from either companies, and I don't receive any commissions/referral bonuses....  My opinions are based solely on my own research, in pursuit of the cheapest plan available, and experience of being their customer.

Telzeq seems to be the cheapest.
Love me or hate me. I still love you.

Aha, you have much to learn!
Read up: http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=5945.0

Obi is a device that you buy for a one time fee of $40 and then you have free phone service (it uses google voice through your internet). I used to pay $60 a month for Optimum phone/internet, and now I pay $30 for Optimum internet and have free phone service from my Obi.

I think there should be noted a differentiation between land-line service on the one hand, and VOIP or any other service a-la-Vonage/Optimum/obi or whatever which utilize your high-speed internet connection OTOH, which are not land-line!  Call it what it is, - internet.

They are two totally separate fields.

FTFY

He wants a landline because he wants to be able to pick up the phone and make phone calls. What's the difference if the voice from the other end is crawling through the phone wires jumping from telephone pole to telephone pole or if it's traveling through cyberspace?

6 of one half a dozen of another.

A) The prices and competitors are a totally different ballpark for either one

B) In a hurricane or blackout etc, in certain situations when one goes down, not necessarily does the other..., tell me there's no difference.

A)Free for one, costs for the other. Hmm, tough choice.
B) Is it worth paying $30-$40 a month ($420 a year) so that if you lose power for one day (and your cell service isn't working) you will be able to use your landline? Some people may lose power more often than others and if you're running a business (and aren't shutting down any way from the blackout) it may be worth the investment. I've been living in my current place for 4.5 years and had a total of 24 hours of blackout - mainly from hurricane Sandy.

I have no agenda other then that I love saving $30  month and can't understand why someone wouldn't switch. The OP was looking for a good landline deal only because he didn't know that there was a practically identical internet option that does the same thing for free.

Free?  Don't you have to pay for the internet?

I (and the OP) have that anyway.

Then there's a choice. Pay another $30 for phone, or don't pay another $30 for phone.

In that case, you can still prepare for losing power, by having a Lifeline (real land-line) phone for ~$1/Mo. (if you qualify)!
