Laptop or Desktop?
« on: January 16, 2013, 07:25:16 PM »
I am in the market for a new computer. I use it for alot of photo editing and newsletters with the Adobe CS suite. I have been using a desktop and I am considering making the switch to laptop. This would enable me to travel with my laptop and work on the road.
What would everyone recommend? I have been looking at the Dell XPS 8500 with 8 gigs of ram, 2 Terabit hardrive, third generation Intel core i7. or the HP Envy Dv6 also with the same specs just less GHz speed than the desktop.
Has anyone had any experience with these two devises? What would you recommend?

As a general question, what would be some of the reasons not to get a laptop?

wife is a graphic designer and she too uses cs5.5 with all the programs and so on, we have an imac i7 1tb 16gb ram i would suggest stick with the desktop, i have a laptop with all that stuff too on it, at first it was great she traveled and used it on the go, but she spent most of the time saving or uploading the foles was not worth it

As a rule Desktops last longer, More upgradeable and parts are easier to replace. They generally last longer and are cheaper to repair

desk top less issues with overheat and other issues. for massive graphic processing/ edit, would think desk top is more durable and would do a better job. cost is better too.

I found that Desktops do much better with running powerfull programs... as for laptops, they deteriorate too quickly... unless you need to travel with it, its not worth it...

IMHO

That would depend on specs.

Even if you buy the top of the line laptop - it doesn't have much room to upgrade. Graphics cards, ram, hard drive, screens size, durability are just some of the reasons I would go with a desktop. Not to mention even if a motherboard on the desktop dies, you can replace it with endless possibilities and many different options whereas  a laptop is way more limited.

laptop vs desktops only wins if you need the mobility or the price of a cheap laptop (for example a $300 laptop is cheaper than a desktop because the screen is included in the laptop)

Where do you find a good deal on this desktop. Also is the liquid cooling raid standard on desktops?

Liquid cooling is def not standard and neither is raid 5. I will post it in the desktop deals thread.
