A friend and family member told me that in other countries like Argentina and Venezuela you can go to an airline office and book any flight from any origin and destination and pay in their currency which they exchange it for the official rate even though you can exchange it on the street anywhere from 20%- to allot more then the official rate and book tickets that way

has anyone ever heard anything about it or did it themselves?

very interesting! was it giving price in a foreign currency?
many credit cards will charge foreign currency fee.

got the following: can anyone explain what is the actual USD cost for the ticket?

Tarifa por adulto
U$S 530 = $ 2.624
U$S 1,00 = $ 4,96
Adultos (1) $ 2.624
Impuestos y tasas$ 3.287
Cargos$ 0
TOTAL$ 5.911
¡Excelente elección!

Most probably had to do with a fare class that was available for Argentina and not for the US.
Nothing to do with the currency exchange.

Awesome, do you have a way to get the actual physical Pesos there? Or only through electronic wire which would convert the Dollars to the legal currency thereby defeating the whole purpose of this?

The trick works when someone exchanges money there on the grey market, and goes down to the airline ticket office to issue the ticket in cash
