As long as it's unlocked it should be fine.

Keep in mind that Straight Talk doesn't have LTE data, only HSPA+. Its perfectly fine for basic web browsing, but not too great for heavy streaming.

Yes, 2 reasons actually (that I can think of).
1) Straight Talk caps 4G data at ~2GB, whereas LycaMobile $49 plan caps at 1GB and cheaper plans barely provide any 4G data.
2) StraightTalk gives a you a choice of AT&T or T-Mobile, whereas LycaMobile only uses T-Mobile.

What would be the best smart phone to use with straight talk on the version network? (looking to spend around $300).
I found on ebay unlocked version Galaxy S3, I called straight talk to ask if it would work and they told me that they can’t know until I provide them with the serial no. anyone had any experience with this?
Thanks in advance.

The S3 is a 4G phone. Verizon does not seem to allow MVNOs to have 4G. Straight Talk seems to only have 4G on their GSM networks.

Do you mean that they the phone will not work on their towers or it will be slower?

Usually it means they just won't allow use of the 4G frequencies. But in some cases, the carrier didn't differentiate between tiers of service available at the tower level (or something like that), so the MVNO had to restrict 4G phones from being activated at all since they are the ones would be hit with paying the additional service fees to the carrier for that frequency/protocol/whatever.

I don't remember which is which, however. Maybe it was Sprint MVNOs who just didn't allow any 4G devices?

Verizon doesn't allow any Mvno to have lte service. Ie, they will sell an iphone 5s which works on verizon but lte won't work.

Just to update, Straight Talk now offers LTE through ATT (there may be no mention of it, but it is). I've been on it for a few weeks on my Nexus 5, it is way faster and more consistent than the previous HSPA+. Note that if your ST SIM is more than a few months old and using the att.mvno APN, you will need to buy a new SIM using tfdata APN in order to use LTE.

Nexus 5. $350 direct from Google. Get an AT&T SIM from ST, which will give you 2.5GB LTE. Best phone on the planet at the moment IMHO, and according to many tech blogs.

Would the nexus 5 work on the verizon network with ST?
(We have much better reception with Verizon).

No, only T-Mobile or AT&T. AT&T's LTE network is significantly better than their HSPA, so you should ask someone in your area who has an LTE phone on AT&T how the coverage is.

It will not work unless flashed (doable but a ha$$le)
Usually it means they just won't allow use of the 4G frequencies. Verizon MVNOs will allow you to activate a 4G phone but the phone needs to  activated manually since it defaults to the SIM for activation and data.
Verizon doesn't allow any Mvno to have lte service. Ie, they will sell an iphone 5s which works on verizon but lte won't work.
I am not sure who "they" is. If the company does not offer 4G then you will not be able to program the phone OTA.
