Would anyone have insight into why United does not allow KSML selection on MEL-SFO.
But they do allow it on MEL-LAX.
Which doesn't seem to make sense, and makes it seem like a system glitch.
AFAIK, its been like that since Covid.
Any ideas how to get around it?

Yes, plenty of times.
Pre-flight, agents will just say that its not an option and there is nothing they can do.
Post-flight messages will earn canned responses, such as this one:

Your email has been brought to my attention for further handling. Thank you for your patience.

I'm sorry you didn't receive Kosher meals on your flight. I can understand your frustration, especially since you requested the meals in advance.

I will share your feedback with our Catering Operations team so we can improve our services.

Additionally, as a sincere token of our apology, I am sending you each a $xx electronic travel certificate. You can use the certificates towards the purchase of a future flight on United and United Express. They will arrive via email shortly.

I haven't gone through all the scenarios, but it seems to affect some Australian flights that depart or arrive SFO.

Any suggestions as how to get meal from MEL to SFO?  - have 4 trips in next 7 weeks - the SFO-MEL had no issue at all.

It is definitely an ongoing issue with MEL-SFO.
I don't know about the other routes, I guess only possible to know with a dummy booking.

Update so far:
I emailed United Corporate, as well as the two airline Kosher caterers in Australia, as well as the two Kosher Agencies in Australia.

United Corporate (auto?)responded that they need time to investigate and hope to have a response within 5-10 business days from an Executive Solutions Manager.

The Kosher caterers clarified that each one respectively is the exclusive Kosher supplier for the two airlines caterers in Australia, NDATA and Gate Gourmet:

• NDATA clarified to their Kosher caterer that they do not stock UA.
• Gate Gourmet clarified to their Kosher caterer they do stock UA, and there is no KSML supply issue on their end; they have plenty of stock and ability to supply all UA flights regardless of departing Australian airport, and the problem lies with UA.

As to the Kosher Agencies, one didn’t respond, and the other didn’t seem to regard it as a matter for their attention… (as of this post).
