Malaysia Master thread
« on: January 21, 2013, 11:14:00 PM »
Did not see a master thread on Malaysia so decided to start one.

I am considering going to Malaysia with my wife, and was wondering if anyone from DDF has ever been there? Is it safe to go as a Jew?
Will I have trouble bringing in my teffilin as well as kosher food?

Also any tips on good destinations within Malaysia?

Multiple DDF'ers have been to and brought food to Langkawi.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

That's great. I am thinking of going to Malaysian Borneo and then either to Langkawi or Bali in Indonesia.

Much nicer beaches in Langkawi but cooler sights and activities in Bali

If all goes according to plans then we would stay at the La Merdien, SPG category 2 in kota kinabalu, which is on the west coast of Malaysian Borneo. Looks like over there they have amazing beaches, snorkeling diving etc, plus the whole Borneo rainforest Orangutan thing. So tough call as I would have already got some beach and some cool stuff there.

Are the beaches in Bali bad or just not up to par with Langkawi?
Also is either Bali or Langkawi a better value than the other?

Bali is known not to have nice beaches while Langkawi has some beautiful ones.

Prices are similar but if you are going all the way,  I would try and stay somewhere with a bit of local flavor (not a Le Meridien)

Any recommendations for lodgings?
Also, what do you recommend within easy distance of KUL if flying in for a few days?

When are you going?
If I go, it'll be mid-December.
I'm trying to figure out which other countries to go to after Thailand. I'll be with 3 small kids.

Wow you seem to get around. What did you do there? Is KUL worth any time?

Did you end up doing Borneo?
I see good rates ex-BUD during peak season, and it certainly seems to be off the beaten track.
