Happy Tu B'shvat
« on: January 25, 2013, 02:52:21 PM »
Happy Tu B'shvat ya'll!

Anyone going to be eating anything funky tonight?

I feel like I gets harder and harder each year to find a fruit I haven't eaten all year round.

Well, don't judge a book by it's cover, it's a big tarty orange. It tastes good.

On this topic, it's upsetting how due to ignorance, every year people are נכשל into making a brocho l'vatolo (an issur d'oraisa, according to many), by making a Shehecheyanu on dried fruits.

A fruit has to be ניכר that it's new and fresh -חדש, dried fruit are not eligible for shehecheyanu.

Don't just take my word for it, ask YLOR, or Google it in English or Hebrew.

It may be the fault of those Jewish companies putting out so called "Tu B'shvat platters", indirectly deceiving the public.

The fruit (or vegetable) also has to be in season.

FWIW, some poskim even hold, that one cannot make Shehecheyanu on fruit בזה"ז.
