This does not seem like a virus, it sounds more like a process crashing. What were you running when it happened?

I got it to restart in safe mode and then was able to start normally.  What program do you recommend for  testing the hard drive

Try the included diagnostic manufacturers tool, or check the bios if it detects the hard drive.
Do you have any important data?

I have a new Dell Inspiron 15z from the recent deal. I have been getting the BSOD recently with this message "driver irql not less or equal tcpip.sys". I have Goggled and read up, however being a tech n00b I have no idea whats wrong. I'd appreciate all help.

@moshep - Irql is very often a memory/RAM issue. Try reseating the RAM chips, or remove one and see if you still have this issue.

@jj1000 - are you using the same hard drive and OS or did you reinstall windows. If this is a software issue even replacing parts wont help you

Are those potato chips or corn chips? Where should I sit when I eat them? ;)

I'm only partially joking. I understand what you say I should do, however I am woefully inept at completing that task.

What is IRQL? What can be wrong with my laptop?

Same everything as the day I got it. I think they will replace it with a new unit. Pretty sure mine is out of stock...

In the past when I had this problem, it was suggested that I use a program like this (http://hcidesign.com/memtest/ don't remember if it was exactly this) to check my ram. If it came back problematic, replacing the ram was an easy and fairly inexpensive solution. Hopefully this will be it and you won't have to deal with anything more complicated.
To change the ram on any computer you can google how to change the ram on that specific model and there will often at least be instructions if not a youtube video.

Good Luck
