Best use for Avios ex-TLV?
« on: January 27, 2013, 03:54:39 AM »
If someone wants to take a vacation to Europe or Asia from TLV, and has a bunch of Avios to burn, which routing/destination is the best in terms of value AND comfort (presumably biz/first)? i.e. CX > AB, but any way to access from TLV? Or any other recommendations?

As an added bonus, RJ is pretty much a no-go.

The only OW flights out of TLV (aside from RJ to AMM) is AB to TXL, DUS, MUC; HG to VIE; BA to LHR; and IB to MAD

Take a look at the award discrepancy thread for some discussion on this.
Why not go to MAD - Canary Islands - Vienna - Germany - TLV, and minimize all the YQ as much as possible?

FWIU, that thread is for people who have a destination in mind, and want to know which program to use. I have a program in mind, and want to know which destination to use.

Canary Islands sounds interesting... though I had been thinking in terms of getting a nice "front-of-the-bus" experience. Something like CX/EY F. I don't know if I'm fantasizing here, or if there's a possibility of that if I take a positioning flight (say, to somewhere in Europe, and then CX F to HKG). Any hope of that? Or am I pipe-dreaming?

what's the question?

You can take BA to LHR & connect to CX to HKG.

Thanks. "The question" was that I don't know (a) if that's the best routing, or if there are other, better uses (such as - at the very least - routing through an airport other than LHR, to cut down on YQ; or perhaps options other than HKG on CX), (b) whether that routing even makes sense (I'm not that great with geography), and (c) whether CX LHR-HKG is amazing as CX TATL, or if it's more toned-down due to being a much shorter flight (and thus not worth J/F).

Are you simply looking to burn miles for a fun flight, or is your goal the destination?
Hopping around Europe can be great w/ Avios if you don't mind economy due to the lack of YQ and the many short flights available.

Don't forget that Malaysia Airlines (w/ their A380 from LHR) is joining OW on 2/1, and Sri Lanka and Qatar are in the pipeline.
Might open up new unique options.

A little of both, though the "fun flight" aspect definitely plays a big part. ;)
