With the whole lost/delayed baggage fiasco happening right now globally, there’s is a company called Blue Ribbon Bags - www.blueribbonbags.com which basically guarantees $1,000 - $2,000 per lost/delayed bag (if they can’t reunite you with the bag in less than 96 hours after landing) for a small $5 - $10 premium.
It’s a superb service.
I recall reading about this or something similar on an Israeli site in the past, this is indeed valuable in today's day and age (if you check in luggage).
Another point to remember about regular trip protection policies as it relates to coverage for baggage is that there is usually a per-item sub limit besides for the overall limit. For someone traveling to a wedding, yomtov, or otherwise, clothing can often easily exceed the per-item limit (I'm not even talking about someone who inquired about checking in a Shreimel). When it comes to expensive clothing (jewelry and electronics will often have their own limitations) one should look for a policy with the highest per item limit, as well as check their homeowner's policy if there's any option to add coverage while traveling, and lastly - purchasing excess valuation coverage from the airline, might not be cheap, but could provide up to $5,000 of protection IINM.
