I've been searching for a good affordable travel insurance for a trip to Israel this summer. There are so many recommendations. So my question is which one to choose for 1 adult & 3 children for six weeks to Israel?

I have a Chase Ink Plus and an Amex Business Platinum. Which card is better for travel insurance. Trip cancellation, medical emergencies etc..
Thanks!

Urgent - need travel insurance for day of travel TODAY
« Reply #124 on: July 05, 2015, 04:30:33 PM »
Anyone know how/if I can take out travel insurance? Traveling to Israel tonight at 11:59pm (Delta direct) for 3 weeks. The guy I called said that it has to be done the day before - anything I can still do about it?
Thanks

Just bought Travel Insurance. Went with Travel Guard as most insurances I researched were really close in price and family has used TG before. Cost was $130 for the 2 of us.

Some things I learned about Insurance (at least with TG):
Quote was MUCH cheaper with a NY address than a NJ. (I have both, so I could have used either one.) NJ was about $235 for the 2 of us.
Quote was the same whether the destination was Israel or UK. (It said to use the country you'll be in for the longest.)
They have 2 plans, Gold and Plat. For the most part, there's no difference just that coverages are higher on the Plat. package. I went with Plat. bc it was only $40 total more than Gold, so I figured why cheap out and take a chance of regretting it later.
I did not opt for additional coverages like car rental, extra medical, or accidental death on plane. My domestic health insurance said they'll cover things abroad, the plan comes with medical also ($50K coverage), and the extra medical is just increased coverages.

Think that's everything I can share about it. Hopefully we won't need it, but be sure that if we do, I'll do my best to include it in the TR.
We lost something last summer valued at $130, coincidentally the exact price of our policy. For some reason, I never thought to file a claim till someone mentioned it to me recently. 1 year after the incident, I filed a claim without even including a receipt (since I no longer have it) and they approved it and sent me a check for $130! b"h and pretty cool! Very happy with the experience at Travel Guard.

Why not read the few pages in this thread and then price shop?

Travel Guard now offers 3 levels, with a new low level called Silver. For my next trip, I cheaped out on the $40 and opted for the Gold package, as I'm staying domestic this time and just feel more comfortable. Gold has a bit better coverage than Silver and was only $12 more. Of course, I hope not to need it, iy"h.

What's the general thought on travel insurance - Always get? Never get? Only for certain countries/circumstances? I'm curious in what the board's thoughts are on this...

Clearly behavioral purchasing decisions are not properly analyzed - logically. if they were insurance wouldn't be making so much money.

If you calculate the odds and they are strong enough to suggest you need insurance, you probably should not be heading to that country ;)

Practically - always have a backup - ensure your always insured is the responsible attitude. Especially if you have a family.

most people here probably dont buy but I have bought a number of times

Bottom line -I dont recommend buying travel insurance for cancellation coverage because you can get it by using a CC. But you may need it for medical insurance.

If you buy a ticket and book with the right CC (not Amex) they will cover changes to itinerary due to illness(no preexisting), also baggage delay etc.

If you book with miles and only charge taxes they may not cover itinerary change costs eg Chase now has language saying they will cover costs if booked with Chase rewards.

If you dont have health insurance outside the U.S. then you may want to get it. Even if you do have, it can be very difficult to collect, its a paperwork nightmare.

I buy the insurance when I travel with my kids. On a few weeks trip someone is likely to need a doctor.

I have used Travelex Lite and recently Travel Guard. They cover kids under 19 for no extra charge with an adult. I cover one adult and all the kids.

I have a collected a few times from Travelex with no problem. Just get all the paperwork you can, the bill, a receipt, diagnosis etc. It doesnt have to be in English.

After speaking with them I learned you can play with the coverage amounts. So if you book a trip with miles and only pay taxes of $50, you could enter that as the trip cost.  Or, you could enter trip cost as $500 and the kids trip cost as $5000 and it will get you some more coverage at the same price. They are fine with that.

Same for the dates of travel, you could enter a longer period of time. Say your trip is for two weeks. You could tack on two weeks at the end and, in case you are delayed. Otherwise the insurance stops when you were supposed to leave.

Dan wrote recently re travel insurance "I’ve never bought those things in my life". Want to know if I'm missing something. He's not buying it because they’re not worth it or because you can get back the cost of the tickets through other ways? If yes, what are those ways?

Would appreciate an answer from Dan or anyone else that has an educated guess.

Hi, if I am traveling domestically, is the only reason to buy insurance for cancel for any reason? I read this thread and I'm trying to figure out if I need to get travel insurance. I booked the tickets with my Amex SPG, and my health insurance should cover me in the US? Correct?

Thanks!
