United Bereavement Policy
« on: January 29, 2013, 12:58:00 AM »
I was booking a ticket for a relative to come in for a funeral tonight. Direct flight from LAX-CLE was $1400! I called and they offered a very minimal discount. Meanwhile I booked a flight on Orbitz with a stopover in ORD for $400. I then called United and asked if I can make the flight a direct because if the first flight was delayed than they will miss the funeral. (The first flight ended up being delayed!) Without even blinking an eye they changed it to a direct flight. Just wanted to put this out there, hopefully no one will ever need this info, but in case this is good to know.

You can always do this and pay $75 for a same day change.
Basically they waived the $75 fee, which is anyway waived for elites and for delays.  Nice that they did it without a fight though.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

They also have a discount program where they give you around 10% of the flight, but you need to fill out a lot of paperwork, including a copy of the death certificate, and s/t from the funeral home.
I ended up giving up on this a few yrs back due to the hassles.
