Any good and easy ways to build my credit?

I started a thread a couple of days a go regarding signing up for some offers that came in the mail to build my credit - I got one negative response.  For some reason I was told that if I pay on time, these cards are not for me (they don't want people to pay on time?):
  -- My card choices are/were:
     1. Discover IT,
     2. American Business Gold, OR
     3. CITI Diamond Preferred.

Do you know of or have experience, easy or not, to build a credit score?  What steps did you take?

I'm not a big spender, but am willing to do more shopping (if that's what it takes) to prove I'll pay on time and build a good score!

I know it doesn't happen overnight and I'm sure there are tons of articles in this forum/on the web that you can point to.  What's the best way to start this?

I apologize if this is the millionth time discussing this issue (probably is), but I only see credit card deals and not many tips or 'how-to' programs to start from scratch.

great thread, to bad I didn't notice it till now. it would have helped when I was looking. For some reason searching never helped until I had the basics. I guess all the info available sort of shocks a person.

Makes sense.  So much info and just not sure where to start.
