router/Ethernet switch question
« on: February 04, 2013, 03:17:46 PM »
Currently I have a cable modem, connected to a router, connected to this switch-TRENDnet TE100-S5 5-Port Ethernet Switch (5 x 10/100Mbps Auto-MDIX RJ-45 Ports).
My question is whether I would be able to connect an additional router to the switch, will the router work and will it be effective or too "diluted"?
I know something about switches not assigning IP addresses not sure what it means....

Why are you adding another router? are you trying to add wifi? If yes then you best option would be to disable DHCP in the new router and just plug one of the Ethernet ports into one of the ports on the switch.

Alternatively if you attached the new router's wan port into one of the ethernet ports on the first router (not switch) it will also work but the 2 networks will not be able to talk to each other (no file sharing between these 2 different networks) unless you do some routing rules.

Thanks, can you elaborate a little on "Disabling DHCP" why is this necessary, and will it be difficult to deal with? My problem is that the tenants living downstairs want internet.. the current wifi sig doesn't reach them, with disabled dhcp will it be complicated?. also will the new router have a diminished capability because its not directly to the modem?

If you are giving it to a tenant then perhaps you should just go directly from the switch into the wan port on the new router and just make sure to put a password on the router and it will be fine.

The more people using the same internet connection, the slower it will be for everyone.

An optimum technician guy told me that with optimum boost, I could have tens of devices and shouldn't notice any slow down. If there is any, it should be attributed to the router. Is this true?

Sounds right.
I used to have Optimum Boost in my office and I never had problems with the speed.

Basically true.

Depends really on what the devices are doing.

Downloading or streaming will use a lot of bandwidth and possibly there could be a notice in if 10 devices are being used.

1 tenant using torrents will eat up all your bandwidth and get you a warning from optimum.. If your router supports QOS you can set your tenants port to be a lower priority then your ports.

When I had optimum boost I didn't notice any decrease in speed when 1 or more of us were using torrents...

Depends on what is being downloaded, and how the torrent app is set.

But most torrents will use most of your bandwidth a speed decrease will be visible.

Unless in your case, you were downloading the torrents using a wifi connection, which then your full internet bandwidth likely was not used up, unless you have an expensive fast router.

I have a Belkin N-150 router. I have 2 PC's an iPad and an iPhone connected with no problem. I also have a Samsung GS3 which until a week ago connected fine.

Last week I couldn't connect to my home network with the GS3, all my other devices connected as usual. I spent an hour on the phone with VZW support and we restarted my router and the problem was solved.

Now 2 days later I am having the same issue. It seems that there is a setting on my router preventing only my Android phone from connecting.

Any advice?

Try to set a staic IP address for your phone.

There should be an advanced option in the wifi network settings.

Thanks.

My phone won't let me connect when I choose Static IP. The "connect" button is grayed out...

You want the static IP to match the IPs of the other devices.

So I set it to static IP and copied the IP address from my iPad. It connected perfectly, thank you.

Is this always necessary for Android devices? What was the problem. I'm so curious to understand.

You want the last batch of numbers to be different. For example if your iPad is 192.168.1.3 and your router is 192.168.1.1 your phone should be 192.168.1.9.

In my first quote I meant you want the first three groups of numbers to match, and the fourth different, as I showed in my 2nd post.

Wanting to use my laptop connected directly to the (Modem) Ethernet wire, is my only option to buy an ethernet Switch and from there run it to my computer and then with the additional ports to my laptop, printer, scanner and all?

I don't mean is that my only option, question really is that's what is used when wanting to branch out to additional devices?
