not allowed to change FFN @ gate?

On a recent flight on Swiss from ZRH I had my A3 *G FFN in the system. At the gate I asked to have it changed to UA but was told that it can't be changed at the gate once checked in. I didn't take no for an answer and asked for a supervisor, she came down and confirmed to me that it's a new rule at Swiss about 2 months old, and its due to different privileges you may receive on accounts with status.
Has anyone had similar experiences?

In the future, try calling Reservations once you're checked in and ask them to change it.

Just do it online. I do it all the time. Once even did it using my iphone app from the United flight before takeoff!

Recently united would not let me change after I upgraded using my Aegean gold. After I had my new boarding pass in my hands I just changed it on my app.

You totally missed my point. I meant that the United site/app will allow you to change the FFN. Swiss, OTOH, has an entirely different (and highly crappy) website, and thus it may not work.

To clarify, can you change FFN multiple times within the same itinerary? For example:

I have TK *G status that I wish to use for free baggage, lounge access, and possibly free online SDC privileges on United flights. On the other hand, I want to earn the MP miles. Here's the round-trip itinerary operated entirely by UA:

MCI-EWR

I plan to put my TK# on the res. and switch it to UA online after check in for the first flight. For the return portion, will I be able to switch the FFN to TK for check-in and then back to UA before take-off?

Just flew LH via FRA, I made sure at both airports by the gate that they remove my FFN, they did and tgey reprinted new bp without #, but they still posted to that FFN.

IME If the reservation is booked on UA's site or if you can access it online you can easily change the FFN even after check in. No so with USAirways.com once checked in you can change anything online but you can always call.
