Tasker
« on: February 05, 2013, 01:04:47 PM »
This thread is for the discussion of all things tasker . This app is extremely powerful and is simply amazing. It may take some getting used to for those unfamiliar with progamesse, but the effort is well worth it. I myself am a total noob when it comes to programing but I already have about 9 profiles, 18 tasks and 2 scenes. All in around 2 weeks.
Any questions or advice on tasker can hopefully get answered here. Please share what you have done with this amazing app and feel free to share your tasker setups and xml files.
Please keep it simple and clean, any long profile should get its own post.
Enjoy

I didn't notice any extra battery drain since getting the app. In fact you can create a battery saving profile similar to
JuiceDefender and other apps

Lets start with a very simple profile I created to address a problem i was having with my keyboard.
Basically I installed SwiftKey3 keyboard to use when I type in Landscape and still wanted to use my physical keyboard when in Portrait. However having SwiftKey3 as my Input Method was messing up the physical keyboard. so I made this profile to change the input method to SwiftKey3 when I am in Landscape and to switch back when im in portrait.
This profile uses the Secure Settings plugin and helper (needs root for this option) as Tasker alone cannot change the input method but can bring up the input method dialog.
Profile: Keyboard (8)
   State: Display Orientation [ Is:Landscape ]
Enter: Keyboard2 (15)
   A1: Secure Settings [ Configuration:Input Method/SwiftKey 3 Package:com.intangibleobject.securesettings.plugin Name:Secure Settings ]

Exit: Keyboard (14)
   A1: Secure Settings [ Configuration:Input Method/Android keyboard Package:com.intangibleobject.securesettings.plugin Name:Secure Settings ]

I was also very discouraged when u first took a look at it but its well worth it to spend a little time learning the app. Read the guides and documentations and try out some of the simple tasks and profiles. My first profile was the launch menu of music apps profile .   Following walk-throughs was how I learned the app.

If you have plenty of time and want to take it to the next level try integrating your tasker with utter!
(maybe that's not the next level not it's a cool step to the side)

My newest tasker profile:
Once a month (the 28th) at 2:30AM call my new Israeli number which of course will ring my phone. Pick up the call waiting and wait 10 seconds and then hang up both calls.
If anyone wants more details I will be happy to post them later

Problems with the above profile:
1) it can be 31 days in between calls thus making this whole setup worthless
2) it can come out on shabbos when my phone is off and won't work.
Solution would be to have it activate every x amount of days maybe 28 or 29. But I cannot find a way to do that yet...any ideas?
Alternatively I can make it activate twice a month.

IIRC you have to set it by date so twice a month would be the eitzah (I haven't played with it in a long time so my info may no longer be relevant)

It is still relevant. That's why I was asking if anyone has a way around it. I would rather do every X amount of days. But I guess 4 cents a month will have to work.

Are you sure you don't have some ties to tasker, you're a little bit too intense about it

I myself am a pretty new tasker user, started just a few short weeks ago. I'm just having lots of fun with it and I think its a great app. The advice I gave Outsider was just the same advice I got from Wolf and others when I got tasker and I was completely overwhelmed.
