i live in a so called "self enforced zone" no tickets unless some bored cop from the nearby precinct is bored that he's looking to be a metermaid or if u took some night shift cops pump stop too many times and by now he knows ur just a reg citizen

I did get 2 fire hydrant tickets in one night in NYC though

Unlike what I've heard most people say, you actually can receive more than one ticket for the same offense.

I appealed it and that's exactly what they told me that can do.

That happened to me once.
I got two double parking tickets 2 minutes apart. (both within three minutes of alternate-side ending)

Is there anything that prevents them handing over tickets per each second of the violation?
Why don't they indeed issue 20 tickets per offense?

FWIW my tickets were from different cops. 
One said I was 7 feet away, the other said 10 feet

i believe that you get 20 or 30 mins between tickets,

and that is probably why you got 2 tickets, since cop would say you moved your car or s/t

just got a ticket for having garbage in my gated are? Private property sanitation tickets, is that legal?

i got a similar ticket (not gated) but was at night (no streetlights nearby) and even if there would have been garbage there's no way he would have seen it

Dan ur absolutely right it's crazy here, I've paid thousands on all kinds of violations & I think it's a crime to bring up kids here BUT
u have some of the best kosher restaurants out here,
I have a great circle of friends here,
& a great paying job here,
so I'm stuck

There are great kosher restaurants in plenty of other cities.  Frankly it makes traveling to those cities more enjoyable, I don't really see that as a factor as long as the other city has some decent places to go out.

Believe it or not it is possible to make new friends and find a new job.  Not for the feint of heart, but still you have to weigh the benefits of living in a safe city with cheap housing or in a city with better weather, etc.

Seriously, though, living in the NY area (although I happen to think NJ is worse), I've considered moving further away...I guess from the perspective of a NYer, it feels like anything further out must be a really, really small community.

The kosher restaurant selection should be less of an issue than the rest of the kosher food infrastructure. For the most part, the selection (both in terms of places to buy and in terms of selection of products in those place) and prices are much worse in areas outside of NY metro area. Obviously that doesn't even make a dent in the difference in housing costs, but I would think it's more important than the restaurant selection.

As far as reasons to stay in NY, for some people family is the reason. I know for myself, I'd be probably be looking at Monsey and other less central NYC areas if not for the fact that my wife would absolutely not go that far from her parents. As it is her brother lives in North Miami Beach and she hates that she doesn't see him and his family more often. I'm not saying I agree with that thinking, but some people feel that way, whether it be regarding family or friends.
