About the Journey, not the Destination?

The more and more I get into this "game", the more I find myself looking at destinations served by airlines with top-rated premium cabin long-haul redemptions and I let that dictate my destination instead of the destination dictating the airlines I fly.

Anyone else with me?

I find telling people that want to go somewhere not so far for a couple days/week either YVR (CX F),LAX (UA Lie flat), HNL (UA Lie flat), since I know its an awesome flight.

I dont agree I always find the destination and then try and get there the best way possible

But, assuming mile are not infinite, don't you want to find at least a happy medium?

For me, I don't like spending double or triple miles for business/first on a simple East Coast-->Europe trip, as 5 hours (equivalent to a transcon) isn't worth the premium. However, US-->Asia/Australia/Middle East, etc, and I'm getting major bang for my points.

I try to evenly weigh the destination, the airlines/aircraft, and the hotels.

That's a good point, too.

I'm not about to drop $500/night at a hotel in places where there are no points-hotels.

So I guess, for me, it's a combination of picking the farthest destinations (most bang for buck), with the best points hotels (don't wanna drop $3-4k for a week's stay), and then picking the most attractive destination from what's left.

When I'm finished with that, I can hit up AA's new A319 in F  to LAX :P

Also, there are plenty of people that don't care about J/F flights as they'd rather fly to 3 destinations in Y than 1 in F. And that makes total sense to me.

But when you have more points than time (as I do), then it makes sense to begin thinking like I think, I guess.

Sounds like a concept I once heard. People enjoy the process of getting to a goal more than they actually enjoy the goal. For example, if God offered me either to work ten years, and after ten years I'll get ten million dollars, or to just win the lotto and make the ten million overnight, I would take the ten years of working.
