You only get the get the bonus 5k for every 20k. Being that the Max transfer per day is 79,999, you'll miss out on the extra 5k

You can also take advantage of this offer in conjunction to Starwood's NIGHTS & FLIGHTS. Hence, 60,000 points would get you 67.5k AA miles plus 5 nights in a cat 3, or 70,000 points would get you 67.5k AA miles plus 5 nights at a cat 4, thus a further savings of 10k spg points. :D

Could I transfer 40,000 miles at once, or do I need to transfer 2 x 20,000 points, in order to get the 5,000 bonus.

Transfer all 40K at once. It needs to be in increments of 20K but it could even be 40K or 60K. you can do up to 60K per day in order to maximize this.

It costs a few thousand Starpoints to expedite and it's only in case of emergency.

Does anyone have a list of the ratio of all hotel points to AA
does it make any sense to try and buy points from say best western and transfer them to AA?

Best western to AA at a 5-1 ratio.
You can use the mileage converter tool on the This page to see all possible conversions and ratios for different programs

While I think writing something like "this page", sounds cool, and has been the style lately for a few members here, I think that it's not always called for. It helps someone remember for next time that the place to go to for a mileage converter is "webflyer.com", when they see that website written openly in the comment, instead of just seeing "this page" and only after clicking on it do they find out that its "webflyer.com". While I agree, that in some cases, like for example if someone just wants to reference a different post on dansdeals.com, it is fine to write "this page" or "here" to link to that page, but I think when you are trying to teach someone something or to direct them as to which site to search for certain things, it is beneficial to write out the actual name on the page, so people see it and remember it better for the future.
