They need to stop treating athletes differently.
I think it depends on what the charges are.
If it's DUI, domestic abuse, assault, an athlete should be viewed and treated just like any other criminal.
When it comes to rape allegations, it's hard to discount the fact that many, many women want to be with athletes, and athletes don't really have much motive for rape (unless I'm really clueless).
You don't expect an athlete to grab someone off the street and rape her. With an athlete, the facts in the case are usually blurrier, because the meeting between them is consensual and there's allegedly a point where the women claims she said "no". You then have to somehow determine using a rape kit and whatever evidence you can get, whether or not he raped her. The problem is there will always be leeway even if the evidence suggests there was a rape, as it can never be proven 100%.
It can also be a case where the women is 17 and could claim rape even if it's 100% consensual.
Which I think is ridiculous to be illegal at that age, athlete or not.
