Possible to change a ticket outside 331 days?

Trying to book a Delta RT ticket using skymiles.

Person wants to fly June 2013, and return September 2014.

Would such a scenario work?

Book June 2013 with a December 2013 return. At October 2013, call to change the return for September 2014.

Appreciate your input...

With all the change fees/fare change that you are going to incur, don't you think you are better off buying 2 OW?

It's an award ticket.

Change fee is $150

No one-ways on Delta anyhow.

Ticket is only valid for 1yr, so won't work officially. No experience w DL but I'd assume they do check

I actually changed a DL ticket a few days ago that was 14 months old... It took a supervisor to do it after convincing her but is doable... btw it was a paid ticket not skymiles

usually in the fare rules, it says ticket valid for one year.

Most of the paid DL fares I have booked state that rebooking must be within 1 year of original purchase date.
