Wondering if I should try Seagate or WD now. Definitely don't want to give Toshiba another try

I'm a video editor. I archive my projects to Raid 1 for exactly that reason.

Thats what you archive? What about when you actually are working on projects?

my os and software are on an ssd, I work on a 2 drive raid 0 and archive onto raid 1. One of these days, I hope to change that raid 0 to an ssd raid 0

If you work off a Raid 0 for speed, I would suggest upgrade to Raid 10 for speed with reliability.

Unless you aren't that nervous of loosing much work during a project.

Raid 10 is way too expensive. When I'm ready to upgrade I'll go with a raid 5. If I'm feeling rich, it'll be an ssd raid 5

In the long run Raid 10 is cheaper than Raid 5.

Recoveries on Raid 5 are difficult and expensive.

DH could tell you ;)

Oh Yea ;D

The truth is if ppl monitor the raid, most of the time recoveries wouldn't be unnecessary, after all you do have the spare drive.

why so difficult? You pop in a new write and it happens by itself! The only difference is that 2 drives can fail at the same time without losing any data.

1) Half of the time I get a raid 5 recovery, more than 1 drive failed.
2) Very often the controller stopped
working as well - some raid 5 have pretty weird configuration.
3) Software based raid 5 sometimes corrupt themselves.
And many more reasons as well.

all the video editing experts who know what they're doing swear by raid 5, what kind of people come to use with those issues?

@rj898 I'm sorry to burst your bubble but video experts don't really know about data recovery or safety, all they really care about is performance. That's why so many video guys still use Raid 0 - which is the most ridiculous array that ever came out for someone that's dealing with valuable info.

I know that many video editors when they buy a drive all they look for is the word "RAID" without really knowing what it is, thinking that Raid is synonymous with backup. I can tell you hundreds of stories I've had with raid 0 and raid 5 that will blow your mind. I did so many raid 5 recoveries for photographers and video editors!

Most of the guys running run 5 don't even know if its a software based raid or have a raid controller, what company it is, is it a standard raid 5 or weird raid config that can take a week or more to recover! All these details make a huge difference
