Ok here's the answer - one sata connection on the motherboard (the one that the SSD OS was connected to) was either loose or had a short. It would start working normally and then lose connectivity and freeze. Since this drive was the OS drive, even if it would regain connectivity it couldn't continue from where it left off in windows and the only solution was to force power it off.
The way I figured this out was when I ran hardware diagnostics it would freeze in middle of the SSD test. That told me its not a software issue. When I tried again and it froze at a dif part of the SSD test I figured its not an issue on the drive, so I tried switching sata channels and walla! Everything worked!!!

Headphones worked - usually sound card issue headphones would be affected as well

Some MOBO have a jack for the headphones. I dont know if that is true for Laptops as well as I have never built one or taken one apart. So I thought maybe the sound card was busted and the headphone jack like on a desktop was still working.

My guess is that the detector in the headphone jack is blocked, so the system thinks that headphones are always plugged in.

Pretty close but along those lines, the headphones jack was on a separate daughterboard connected to the motherboard. Somehow when he pulled out the jack, it got a short. I had to change that piece and then it started working again.

seems that a short in a laptop is VERY common

I think when the guy yanked out the headphones it moved inside and a piece got loose. I'm obviously putting up the more interesting cases, not the typical

Hard drive failure. It could be the cable got disconnected, or simply that the hard disk is broken.

Or someone over rode the memory located at 0 (the bootstrapping)
