Notes:

IMPORTANT: If you have food in your suitcase when it comes off the belt there  will be a zip tie around the handle of your suitcase that's to indicate  to customs that you have food, when you walk through customs they will pull you aside and go through your bag. Here's the trick, Since you can't bring along a knife or something like that to get the zip tie off so bring along a nail clipper in your carry on and smoothly when no ones looking snip off the zip tie and put it in your pocket. Good Luck!

Scuba is fantastic in Bali. If you're really adventurous, some of the world's best diving is in raja ampat.

Saw that, but it seems to be a place just for scuba, and I'm with 4 kids...
Plus, as a beginner, I'll be happy with anything decent.

Booked a flight back using the QR sale with the family.

What other places in Indonesia are recommended for a few days? Yogyakarta looked intriguing.
Gili Island a quiet alternative to Bali?

Anyone familiar with northern Bali? Would like to do a hiking/village experience for a few days.

Also, any recommended tour companies to contact? We did the last trip on our own since it was much shorter.
First of all, look into Kai Islands, its a bit off the beaten path, some of the smaller islands there have not yet been trampled by tourism.

As for northern Bali, I have done it twice, look through my bali thread.
Recommended spots:

Amed
A nice chill place, no real nightlife so it's more laid back and generally more family friendly. Some very decent villas & hotels there.

Kubu / Tulamben
About 30 minutes north of Amed, not really a place to stay but I did a discovery dive (I think I paid $85 for 2x20 minutes) and explored the USS Liberty wreck. Most of the scuba companies are based in Amed.

Batur Hotsprings
May be a good daytrip for the kids (i stayed in the area overnight as well)

Lovina Beach
This town is know for the dolphin tours, I did not really like the place too much, seemed to have a lower quality crowd.

White Sand Beach, Blue Lagoon (great snorkeling) & Virgin Beach were my favorite on the east side of bali.

I'll be glad to answer more specific questions.

Thanks for the idea, looks really nice. Just wish there was a direct flight.
We're not overly beach focused, so would Kai have lots of nature options? Seems to be a quiet beach getaway.

I haven't been to Kai, it's on my list. Don't know much about it.

If you're into nature and want something more accessible, perhaps lombok Island is what you should be researching.

P. S. If you want something awesome for the kids, I recommend Cebu/bohol in the Philippines. Submarine rides, swim with whale sharks. Tarsier sanctuary, waterfalls, scuba etc...

Next time :)
The QR sale on kids was too good to pass up, and July is the best weather season in DPS area.

So the plan is as follows.
5 days Lombok (close to Sennginni), includes a sabbat
6 days Bali (Amed beach), includes a sabbath
2 days Yogyakarta

Airbnb's in each

Loved that part of the country. Go to Borobudur for sunrise. One of the coolest things I've ever done

If flying into Jakarta, and then flying to Lombok/Bali on a different airline, do I have to pick up the luggage in Jakarta, or can it be checked all the way through?

Can't advise re Airbnb as I stayed at a hotel right near Borobudur but def take a horse and buggy ride around the area and see the rice paddies and villages. We also visited a Midrasa which was quite interesting.

Does anyone have recommendations for activities to do with a 16 month old? Sure, it'd be nice to hike mountains that involve 2am wake up times, scuba off the coast of Nusa Dua and ride around on Motor bikes with mini chairs for the baby in front, but that isn't actually going to happen.

We'll be sleeping in Ubud the whole time, but can obviously go elsewhere for an activity.

The only two things I've found so far are the monkey forrest (though many say it's overrated) and a tour/walk of the rice fields. Are there other activities that are good to do with a kid that are unique to Bali? Does anyone have a driver to recommend for personalized tours?

How long did you spend there? Any longer than any other zoo?
