Ana does not let you search for star alliance partner award avail. if you have no miles in your ana account. I guess most people dont have any miles in their account. Here is a way around it, at the moment it works, I cant promise for how long

1) Click on "ANA International Flight Awards"
2) Enter any (valid) city pairs and any (valid) dates ( HAS TO BE A FLIGHT SERVED BY ANA, LIKE JFK TO TOKYO)
3) Click "Next", NOT of Flight Search
4) Scroll all the way to the bottom
5) You should see "Use Star Alliance Member Airlines" button, click this to search *A availability.
6) You will be redirected to the star alliance search page, from there it works without miles in the account

Have fun

didnt try it, but it does not say, that you need enough to fly. I guess they made it, since to many people have an account without ever using it. When you fly a small flight on star alliance or stay at a partner hotel credit it to them and you will be fine

Usually when you search EWR it will also check JFK and LGA, but if you want to be sure, just use the "flight search" button, there you can put in multiple segments and specify the dep. and dest. airports.

In general ANA wont give you all the options. It will try looking for a direct route and if it can't find that then it will tell you what it considers the best route.
The best way to search is segment by segment.
When travelling through Europe good connecting airports to start with are FRA, MUC, ZRH.

followed by VIE, WAW, BRU, (IST I'd skip).

Via the USA I'd look from EWR, or via PHL or YYZ

They'll probably close the loophole as well.

Any SPG Plats going to transfer 1 mile into ANA to see if that does it?

I have 80K ANA in my account. Give me an itin that is more than 20,001 miles in distance and I can test that out. (20,001 = 85,000 in coach)
Although that might not prove it 100%

I tried and it let me search availability without a problem. After choosing the flights it showed me the results with a message that I cant book because of shortage of miles. It did not give me the fees either as they always only gave the fees when you have enough miles in the account.
