I would recommend calling Nest and asking them what really needs to be turned off.  You basically want to know which settings can sense if there are people around or not. I think it senses body heat to know if there are people home. I turn off the Auto-Sched, Auto-Away and Airwave

So I agree, auto-away is what contains the motion sensor. You may also want to change the "Screen On" setting to have it turn on when you push the thermostat, otherwise it will light up whenever someone passes in front of it.

But otherwise, the other 2 are not problems:

If you shut everything off how can you get savings? Yet, you have to shut some off for Shabbat. Could someone make an app that turns these off on Friday afternoon and on Motzai Shabbat?

What makes the difference is the prevention for over compensation with heating temperature...the nest thermostat spends a week or so studying how long it takes your heating system to get to the desired temperature. using that information, and the schedule you have set up, it will begin heating (cooling too) in advance of the desired time and temp (i.e. 6am it should be 72 degrees) to ensure that at the desired time, it is the desired temp. Using other thermostats, people have the tendency to overcompensate and set the thermostat at 75 to get the house to the desired 72 faster....

I hope this made sense...

Anyone have any updated feedback in terms of costs savings?

Now that they added the feature that allows you to schedule the fan I am really tempted. On Shabbos when we have guest over I would like the ability to schedule the fan to be constantly on rather than on auto. It "feels" much cooler with the air constantly moving.

It is saving me money, but I think that is because I am being more careful in general. I am checking and controlling my thermostat while I am not home and changing the temp much more often. Versus just having a program set and not touching it..
