Two-factor Authentication
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:13:55 AM »
Who here uses two-factor authentication? I started using it after the big Mat Honan hack with all of my online accounts that support it. Google, Dropbox, Lastpass... I thought it would give me problems logging in from other places but I've been pleasantly surprised at the ease of use.
What have been your experiences?
For those unfamiliar, two-factor authentication requires a second layer of security when logging in from an unrecognized device.

Personally found it to be a pain in the neck when I used it for google - anytime I'm on a different computer, or even a different browser on the same computer, gotta get the message off my phone, which, though perhaps shocking for some, is not attached to my hip at every second of the day. So I dropped it.

Once you get the initial annoyance of entering the code and getting all of your different devices recognized, its pretty painless. I haven't had to enter the code in months.
I hear you though. Its a tradeoff between convenience and security. I'm paranoid, so I do it ;)

What would I do when logging in from a different country when I can't get texts to my phone

You can use an app called Google Authenticator on your phone when you are out of the country or offline. GA generates a 60 second one-time code that you use to login instead of a text to your phone.

You have 10 one-time use codes that you can use when you're away from your phone.
You can store a few in a paper in your wallet or in an email address that's only known to you.

That would be better as a backup to the app than the second factor. More annoying to take out your wallet and start looking for a paper with codes than open an app on your phone. For me at least :)
You are also limited to ten logins before you need to print out another paper.
