So far what I loved about the GO SMS was that you can scroll down within a popup for messages from the same contact and toggle on popup between different contacts. All this while keeping said messages as "unread".

But it's sooo slooow...

I've since tried Textra, Hello, Chomp and Handcent and they're respective popup's are incomparable to GO. :(
How about Hoverchat?

Textra
Why do these apps ask for so many "permissions"?

apps need permissions in order for different features of the app to work. Usually the developer can  explain why each and every permission is needed

Do they actually need access to this in addition to everything else they ask for?
Quote
Device & app history
    retrieve running apps
    read sensitive log data
And it's a Malaysian company.

Does anyone else care about granting random android apps all the permissions they ask for or am I being overly paranoid?

I think they might need that if you want to send a bug report via the app.

Use permissions manager to take away any suspicious permissions (need to be rooted or running JB I think)

If you don't trust them with your app data how do you trust them with your text messages?

Good point.
Does the developer have access to the content of the text messages?

He can if the app sends them to him.

Officially Permissions Manager-App Ops https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ovmobile.appopslauncher does not work on 4.4.2 but I  just tried it on my non rooted GS4 and it worked like a charm. App Ops doesn't give you access to all the permissions but you get a nice variety

so you can turn off certain permissions to specific apps? does that make them not run correctly?
