Don't think YouTube would ever allow it, due to copyright infringements. They always try to crack down on the ones that make it possible. As a matter of fact, that is exactly the reason why you can't find Tubemate on the official Google play store!

It depends how the app was coded. Every app is different.

no it's not true
could sometimes be true
a website once you close it it's gone (maybe not the cache) vs a app could be fetching uploading updating data as long it is running even behind the scene

some people have this mistake, that when you swipe off your history the app is killed.

Whatsapp has released calling features. You can call and receive phone calls through whatsapp using the internet. This allows free long distance, extended minutes on a plan etc. They're releasing this feature slowly but if you receive a call through whatsapp then you'll be on the fast track to receive it. You also need to be updated to its latest version.
