Man you guys aren't too street smart are you ? Those scams have been around
100 years . Be careful for the diamond in the pocket switch.
Got me once a looong time ago with that one LOL
Watch out for the woman bending down to get the gold ring in Paris . She tried twice in 5 days last year outside the Park Hyatt . I started screaming at her , you again , what do you think I am from the boonies
Reminds me of a story we had in Barcelona.
I was traveling Europe really low budgte with 2 friends. Barcelona was the 2nd city for the trip, and we still had 2 weeks left. My friends both love gambling, I don't really care for it.
Anyways we are walking down LAs Ramblas and my friend sees a crowd around a table. Sure enough they are playing a variation 3 Card Monte with 3 matchboxes and a little white ball. You have to put down money and if you guess which box has the ball correctly you double your money. We watch for a few moments and we see lots of money changing hands and people wining and cheering.
Now, I always knew this to be a scam so I tried telling my friend not to waste what precious money we had left. Before I can blink he plunks down €100 and guesses and looses. Then he plunks down another €100 to try and recover his loss and looses again.
All of a sudden we hear and see a commotion, and all the people around the game start yelling and running. Yup, the cops came to bust up the game. They wanted a statement from us, and my friend wanted his money back so we went to the police station. I was a bit paranoid that these "cops" were phony and they were part of the gang. Now that they identified us as easy targets thanks to my friend we were going to be kidnapped and sold into white slavery. We were sitting in the back of the police car and I was bugging out. I asked the cop to verify that he was police and he got on the radio and had the dispatcher read me his badge number. I was only partially convinced.
We finally pull into some alley and the car stops. We walk into a building which is deathly quiet, no other cops around. It turns out that a camera crew had followed us from Las Ramblas. They were filming a documentary on street crime and wanted to video the whole thing. The cops were okay with it oddly enough, but I was bugging that they were part of the gang and wanted our personal information in case e decided to testify or something. I adamantly refused to have them video us, but they kept right on taping. We filled out a statement and provided our contact details, passport numbers etc.
Then the cop asked us how much we had bet, we said €200. He shows us the whole bundle of money and there is €200 and a whole bunch of worthless € look alike. All the commotion around the table and money changing hands was staged. There were 5 people in on it, all waiting for my dumb friend to be their mark.
Then the cops shows us how the scam works, and big surprise the ball isn't under any of the boxes. The guy quickly picks it up with his long dirty thumbnail while hes switching the boxes around.
Suffice it to say I could have killed my friend and his compulsive gambling!
