What do Sam's prices start at?
I believe USD $300 for a suit.

I’m going to skip the Hong Kong part of our trip since there’s a lot on here already, and we didn’t stay there for long anyhow. However I will mention that we stayed in Kowloon, and ate at the Chabad of Kowloon for both meals. The food was amazing, the people warm and friendly; we just had an overall very good experience.

I am getting the feeling that HKG alone is too much for a week.

But as you said, Sam's quality is top notch. You won't get the same for $300-500 as you will for $10k.

Do these tailors source fabric from Italy and England or do they mostly have Chinese fabric?

I've gotten a bunch of stuff from Bobbies Fashion also in TST.  Great quality.

I've taken Hugo Boss and Zegna shirts that I like,  handed them the shirts,  picked out fabric and just said copy these.

Smart man!
they know how to copy if you have a perfect fit shirt or suit
bring it
they can copy it faster

but pick the same fabric (Not pattern) or it won't be exact cut

All fabric in HK is from china no matter what they tell you
unless you go to Ascot Chang

They don't even need to measure you to copy the shirts.

A guy could go to Nordstrom,  buy 3 or 4 nice Hugo Boss shirts or whatever that fit well and you like the cut, cuffs, collar etc.  Take to HK to get copied.  Return the Hugo Boss shirts to Nordstrom after coming home.  I haven't gone that route,  but might next time i need stuff made.

If I was looking to spend that much I would probably go to Italy.

1. Does WhatApp work in Hong Kong/China mainland? If so, can it be used to make free WhatsApp phone calls to WhatsApp contacts to the US?

2. Is WeChat better for this?

3. Planning a 2 week visit to China. Would you recommend a VPN to retrieve Gmail and, if so, which one and why?

1. Yes but quality is dependent on your connection and theres. Try Magic Jack so you can call a real phone number for free
2. We Chat works extremely well in china - but I prefer WhatsApp overall
3. I don't recall them ever blocking my gmail emails
Facebook & Google are blocked not to sure Gmail was ever blocked

I like WeChat better than WhatsApp and have started using it in lieu of Skype to vchat with my wife and son when I'm I out of town.

Gmail,  as well as much of sites blocked by the Great Firewall,  is location dependent.  My company email is run on the backend by gmail and I cannot access in certain cities (without a VPN) but have no problems in others.

I've always used ExpressVPN (as have many of my friends who do business in China) .  For one price you can use it on a laptop or desktop and other mobile devices.  One word of caution is Ive had some issues with it on my new Windows 10 laptop.  It still works flawlessly on my Windows 7 laptop and my android phone. I dont know if its settings on my new machine or problems with ExpessVPN on the new OS.   I would also recommend downloading and installing it at home prior to travel to save yourself the hassles once your overseas.
