Using Amex Points for Hotels

Does anyone have any insight on the best way to use Amex points for hotels?

Is it better to book directly through Amex using points or to transfer the points to a hotel rewards program and then book?

If one has 140,000 Hilton points, transferring 3000 to HHonors makes VERY good sense.

(At least prior to 3/28).

Actually if you're going that route you might as well transfer 5k to Virgin Atlantic and from there to HH.

So does if a person has 73000 BA and wants to fly JFK - YVR RT CX F, transferring 2k to BA is a awesome value.

 But in general, both cases aren't worth it.
