My weekend trip to Zurich - Trip Report
« on: March 17, 2013, 04:20:09 PM »
I flew out of Chicago to Zurich on March 7th on American from ORD-JFK-ZRH. Was in business for both flights. While in New York where our flight was delayed for another three hours due to an aircraft switch I was able to get into the Flagship Lounge. Because of the delay we landed in Zurich at around 11:30, 12pm instead of 8am like we were supposed to and didn’t really give me a chance to go get any kosher food.
Thanks to Google Maps it took me about 30 minutes to get from the airport to the Park Hyatt via train and then a tram. Check in went very smooth and quickly, showed me how the NFC card system works to get to your floor and into your room. I found this too be much more effective and convenient then regular room keys since I always end up keeping it in the same pocket as my phone I didn’t have to keep on going down to the front desk and ask for it to be reregistered. After getting settled and relaxing a bit I decided to take a walk to the lake and down Bahnhofstrasse St. By that time it was almost Shabbat so I decided to head back to the hotel.
For Shabbas I decided to take the offer from non-other than chuchem for Shabbas meals and I can 100% say that I am very happy that I did. The walk to the Shul and his house from the Park Hyatt were both about 20 minutes but very easy. He was very accommodating and along with his wife and kids to have a total stranger over for both Shabbas meals. And would just like to thank them all for everything.
Saturday night I decided to just play it quite and took another walk, ending up by the Casino. Even though it was small, it had to one of the nicest (small) casinos I’ve seen and was quite impressed with it. Their etiquette was top notch and something that I think made it as nice as it was. (No hats allowed and all coats had to be coat checked)
After the casino, I decided to try out the Onyx bar in the Park Hyatt. All I can say is that it was a busy bar with a great selection of drinks and wanted to try most of them. Unfortunately, I decided to only get one because of the prices for them but it was a drink that was pleasantly awesome.
On Sunday I took the train to Luzern and again, and uneventful trip due the Swiss train system. In Luzern I took a trip up to the top of Mount Pilatus. As expensive as it was, I believe it was worth every penny as it provided some of the best views around and a great trip. I would recommend it for anyone who has a day to spend in or around Zurich.
Sunday evening I went to the restaurant Olive Garden. I had the Tuna Tatar with whipped avocado cream 23 served with sorbets of mango and wasabi for the appetizer, the Wiener Schnitzel (veal) for the main dish, and the strawberry mouse for dessert. After a drink or two added in, it would probably be one of my most expensive meals to date.
On Monday morning, I got to the airport quite early and made it with about 50 minutes before the earlier flight to London than I was one. I was flying home ZRH-LHR-ORD again in all business. When checking in BA put me on the earlier flight since there were some weather delays and I just wanted to get out of Zurich so I wouldn’t end up being stuck. Thankfully my flights from ZRH to LHR and from LHR back home to ORD were uneventful and went by nice and fast.
