Can/should I book a second (later) flight in order to be able to standby on a desired flight?

Trying to get one more family member on the same flight as the group. Currently I have her on the flight before ours, and waitlisted for ours. UA supervisor tells me that flight is sold 138/139 in economy so chances of X/XN opening are nil.

There's XN on a later flight - and I can cancel an award with no fees.

Thinking of booking a second ticket for that day, using that to request standby on the desired flight, and cancelling if it doesn't work.

Thoughts / Advice?
I remember when a coke was a nickel, and you could buy VRs in OD.

Is there anyone else already on standby on the list?
If no, I would do the second option.

I am searching for a one-way Austrian flight TLV-VIE-NYC, with a week stopover, on the United site. I am doing a Multiple Destinations search, when selecting the flights (direct) it comes up with 55,000 Saver Award price instead of the 42,500 expected. What am I doing wrong? Can this be reserved on the website or do I have to call?

I learned it the hard way but I guess the United App is not too reliable.
Maybe this was already posted before but here is something I bumped into today:
When looking into booking a business seat from Nyc-Tlv united has a few options with stops in yyz, here is one (see below I attached a screen shot)
But when selecting this flight, look what comes up, you can't actually select the business option.
It was interesting to me and very frustrating at the same time...!!

Phantom availability on partner flights is an old problem with UA, it's not only their app, their website does it as well.

I had already all plans figured out made other people crazy, when I was about to book I realized.
I even wondered how come aeroplan didn't show the same availability!

This particular case doesn't have the problem on their website.

Can I assume that the same thing can happen the other way around?
Meaning, if there is no availability but when selecting the flight availability would appear?

I know @Dan says by the seminars you should never trust the calendar, if there is no availability on a certain date just select the day and it might appear.
He even showed examples with screen shots.

How would you select a flight if there's no availability for you to select?

If there is availability for standard award, and saver would appear.

Flying from Rome-FRA in Y with LH 7pm booked with UA, then 8AM SQ-JFK, in J.

Will I have to pay for each bag or can I check it all the way to JFK given that I'm Connecting to SQ J in the morning?

You already get one free bag in international economy.

If you have more than that, you'll pay because they're separate tickets. But you may be able to get them to interline.

I have a free OW that i added on a ticked booked last July. Will UA allow me to change the date for free (flight time change) to a date after the one year from initial award booking?

There's a flight later today on LX JFK-ZRH-TLV. On Lufthansa's site there's J availability for the whole thing, but on Aeroplan there's only J on the second leg (first is Y). Any chance it opens up for J on United.com in a couple hours?

M&M has better access to LX seats than star. No indication that it will open to star.

As far as I know, there are no direct flights between NYC and BUD (budapest).  Flew there in December and had to connect...
