If you book it as Round Trip tickets (one from each account) - you can maximize the free stop/OW, for example: NYC-TLV-NYC//NYC-LAX (even a year later) for the price as NYC-TLV-NYC, but if you book them as One Ways you can not do this.

Theoretically, you can do it online. You'll likely need to call if it's even slightly complicated as UA.bomb can't handle that.

if am looking to avoid close in booking fee, does the change have to be on the same flight, or same route?
and does it have to be in the same Award category, ie if i book a Standard Award and find availability is saver Award.

I think there's a chance. A flight I booked on that route for my mother around Pesach time had P that switched to I a few days out. Y doesn't seem very likely though.
