If I book an economy ticket in United, and later on business opens up , can I upgrade w/o a charge and just pay diff. In miles ?

I just got the explorer card.... It doesn't seem like there is any difference in availability before and after logging in... Why would that be?

Can someone please provide me with info or a link on how best to take advantage of stopovers/open jaws on a united rt award ticket?
Also, when booking a ticket with a stopover how do u do it online? I tried with the multi city search but it priced the awards separately even though I booked the exact same itinerary over the phone on one award ticket. Wanna redo it online to avoid $25 booking fee (still within 24 hrs)

If you book something online and call to change it within 24 hours they won't charge you.
