Trying to book my friend a trip to Switzerland, Italy and Israel next winter... He has 700K UR but doesn't want to use more than like 250K on flights... I'm thinking to try to nab SQ R JFK-FRA and the rest with one giant fun United award... does that make sense? Any ideas?

For 2 people.

IDK, I've read about United's really loose routing rules, figured could make something happen like ZRH-MXP, FCO-TLV, TLV-EWR

Is expanded availability with the UA card, only for UA flights itself, or does it open more availability for partner awards too ?

Even they would show I9, what does UA availability have to do. We all know that they don't release all inventory to UA. If it is not available on UA/AC then there is no point of calling up UA.

If I booked an award flight and paid the fees with a united explorer card, and have to cancel due to being sick. Does it cover the $200 cancelation fee?
No
Update. United refunded $150 out of the $200 after I sent in a doctors note recommending me not to fly. Then I filed with the credit card for the last $50 of the cancelation fee and the non-refunded $75 close-in fee. Today I received a check for $125. All fees covered.

We had 3 O/W award business tix on LX using UA miles from ZRH-NYC. The original booking was for the 1PM to JFK. We changed it a day before the flight to the 5:20 flight to EWR & paid $75 per ticket for the change. We got emails with the new flight using the original eticket #s from UA.
When we tried to checkin, LX said they don't see any flights attached to the etickets. I called UA & they told me they see the problem & (supposedly) fixed it while I was talking to them. We went back to LX & they said they see the reservation pending, but the final ticket not done yet. They advised to wait an hour as it could take time to ticket. When we went back to them later, they said the reservation was canceled & I need to talk to MileagePlus to correct. When I called back UA, they said the system is showing LX canceled it & they can't do anything so close to they flight as LX is in control of the flight. (I am not sure this is true, I think the problem was that there wasn't any space available at that time.)
We ended up buying new O/W tix for $1300+ each in economy.
I am assuming that at this point I should have no problem getting the miles redeposited without the $200 fee. I also hope to get back the $75 change fees as they did not book the change correctly.
Is the any chance of getting reimbursed for the cost of the new tickets? What is the best channel to use?

Fast forward: I tried reaching out to UA, got nowhere, other than refund the miles & fees. I contacted the DOT in July. Less than 30 days later, received from UA "Although we’re unable to honor your request for full compensation, we will be sending each of you a $1000.00 United electronic travel certificate as a gesture of goodwill and to help make amends."
