Someone who it happened to. He was doing it quite extreme.
Are you sure you're not confusing the story with something else that said person was doing?

Don't they only give you +7 days to fly, anyways?

Just to clarify:
UA's normal protocol would be to let you reebook within 7 days regardless of award availability?

Yes.
Does it make a difference if you booked the ticket through United or another Star Alliance airline?

Does any one here have experience with using united gpu's?
I am currently booked with 2 kids from ewr-mel on january 15th. I am a gold member.
Should i split the reservation to get a better chance (of at least some of us) clearing ?

Always split if you're willing to sit separately.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Weather gaming is a DDS staple.
I think you had a DDMS Post on the topic last year or two, as well.

Weird. They are also 2 different amounts...
Is it possible it's one fee split in 2?

A flight I want (LH) is showing alternately on the app, online, or incognito, but never on all three. I suspect it may be phantom. Worth it to transfer in miles to attempt a booking, or is it a waste of time and it will just tie up my UR?

just to share an experience I went thru today maybe this can be helpful to others. sat night I needed to book a flight to Israel for my dad and when I searched I was able to find  a EWR-TLV non stop for 75K for tonight's 11pm flight but on Sunday my dad said there was no need to fly and that I should cancel. it was hard clicking on the cancel button as I know to find that availability is extremely rare but bh the reason for the cancellation was a good one. today however my dad called saying that he indeed needed to go to Israel tonight and he wanted to know if I can still book that flight? I checked on the website and availability was gone for that flight so I called and the rep said no ( as expected) then I asked for a supervisor and after waiting for half an hour on phone she was able to grant me the award ticket for the same amount of points. she sais she will make a "one time exception" for me- I was soo happy. I had to pay the booking fee but def worth it!
has this ever happen to anyone?
