Booked on United, 1st leg is with TAP (Portgual) second leg is with United all on 1 ticket. Does the luggage transfer, or do I have to collect it?

Should transfer but ask at the airport.

Can I book an award with a day stopover as 1 booking online? Or would I need to call in?

2 awards unless you find one of those 30+ hour itineraries.

United does not allow stopover of more than 24 hours and only allows whatever itinerary comes up on search. No more create your own itinerary.

from the website it's seeming like the $75 close-in award fee is charged once on the RT. (or once on each OW booked separately)
I searched for a pair of flights which I only found separately. so now I have them booked at $75 each.

Is there a way I can merge the 2 itineraries, and get back the 2nd fee?

(or -i'm still in the 24 hour window- some way to force the system to find the 2nd segment as a'change' to the 1st itinerary)?

I'd cancel it since within 24 hours, and call up, list them the flight numbers of the 2 flights you want to book as 1 ticket.

if that flight is no longer available, will it 'redeposit'? or do i run the risk of losing it?

That's always a risk.

phone rep says they can't add a segment to an existing flight (within 24 hrs to departure), would need to book new res. online it seems to allow it, but shows less availability than when searching straight for OW.
DROPR? web support?

I'm trying to book  EWR-LHR in J. Currently it's showing almost all business class avail for purchase but not in saver. I have seats in Y as of now. Is there an option to upgrade with miles should J become available or will I have to rebook? What's the penalty for canceling Y that was booked with miles?
