When I cancel an award ticket (over the phone) how long does it usually take for the miles to be back in my account?

It can take 24 houts or more, I had success calling in and ask them to randomly redeposit the miles. I think it required HUCA.  :D

can you explain how to cancel an award ticket on UA. I did it online and got the miles redeposited, but how would i use that same mileage to get a ticket down the road when the mileage will be higher? i am confused...

You are confused big time.......

Read Dan's post about it. If your miles are redeposited you canceled it and you will not be able to rebook it, there is a option to cancel and a other option you have to select the other one.

So if I book now FRA - EWR and redeposit the miles, can I change later for FRA - JFK, for the old mileage rate, is that considered a routing change?

I too may need to cancel an award ticket this week and have them redeposit the miles .

 Why are you thinking to do the cancellation via phone and not on line? as I would have thought online was the way to go--
