You still haven't told us what you're trying to book. How can we tell you what's wrong?

And sometimes it's just the beauty of united.dumb so you gotta PUTPAC.

OK, so here's what I am trying to do. MEL-PIT on July 8 on saver first class. The itineraries that are available are crazy, they all involve weird layovers, specifically IAH or EWR. Not places I have any desire to stop in.

What I want to do is go MEL-LAX or even MEL-SFO on 7/8, stay over, then fly home to PIT on 7/9.

Usually when UA.bomb errors out without showing any results is because of an illegal routing but your routing sounds legal. Put the leg you found on hold online and PUTPAC to add the rest.

Can anyone put legs on hold? Or since the new rules, you need certain status?

Why mess with holds? Just call and get it done.

I pull it up on UA.com just by searching MEL-PIT.

You probably have expanded availability. I am "in between" explorer cards right now.  :(

Yes, I see, they all involve sleeping in IAH or EWR in the wee hours. I am trying to get my stopover to be in LAX.

Ok, I'm all done. I got MEL-LAX and then same day LAX-DEN-PIT.

I did not see that possibility online but the ex-Continental agent did. I opted for getting home that same day over the LAX stopover which I really only wanted as a way of avoiding sleeping in IAH or EWR.

Thanks, guys!

If i am paying 65K FCO-NYC for standard award, can i get a higher class of service on NYC-LAX, or is it only based on which class i am flying?

based on which class you are flying? Why you paying so much. Nothing cheaper?
