I booked two one way tickets. The first:

LGA-IAD-JNB

The second:

JNB-FRA-LHR-JNB

I did it that way because I wanted the stop in LHR on the return, and it wasn't giving me those flights when I tried to book it all as one return flight.

Now I want to change it to stop in LHR on the way to JNB instead of the way back. Phone rep says the reservations can't be combined into one return flight to make the change, and as a one way I can't book EWR-LHR-FRA-JNB at the same rate. Should I HUCA, or is she correct?

First of all, the stop in LHR was for more than 24 hours?

Originally, no. Now I want it to be. Though when I price out my intended itinerary, it comes out to the same mileage cost (slightly more taxes). To do it as a change it adds 14k miles and close to $600.

You can't do a stopover more than 24 hours on a one way. Taxes ex-LHR is sky rocking.

Right, so my question is: it it possible to combine 2 one way tickets into one return ticket.

Why do you wanna combine them? To get the stopover for free? The $600 you'll have to pay regardless.

I don't think its an easy process to combine two tickets. Next time book a RT over the phone.

If I can combine them, the difference in taxes plus only one change fee will be about $150. and yes, the free stopover would be nice, too, though I am not so worried about dishing out the extra 14k points.

HUCA definitely worked.

I ended up changing the first one way to a return, paid the extra mileage and taxes - but they didn't charge me a change fee. The rep didn't know why.

Cancelled the second one way, and have a year to use those miles so I avoid the redeposit fee.

You paid the UK tax?

Also, I hope you know that when you will be using the miles that were not deposited back into the account you'll have to pay a change fee.

Yup, and yes. The difference in taxes plus the future change fee (they didn't charge one for this change) is $170.
