I find most routers are iffy, they either work, or don't. Many stop working right after a few months.

Currently have the D Link N300 Router (http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-615-wireless-n-300-router) which is approx 2.5 years old and seems to interfere with our son's baby monitor. Speeds are lower and sometimes I cannot connect to the router when the baby monitor is on.

Should I buy a new router? I've tried playing around with the wirless channels but didn't do much.  Any suggestions?

TIA!

I have a 100mbps download internet plan. When directly connected to modem with a cable I get around that. But through the router I only get 30ish is that normal? I'm using the optimum provided router.

Only 30 plugged directly into the router or over wifi?

Wifi depends on how close you are to the router..

Over WiFi, even if I'm standing right in front of the router.

Try plugging a computer directly into the router, that will let you know if the router is receiving the full speed from the modem.

If it's not anywhere close, then you need to call Optimum.

I would spend a bit more if it's your main router. If it's for a repeater then it's fine.
It will be my main router.

What are you basing your opinion on? In other words how do I know which router is better than the other? Just rely on if it's more expensive/new that means it's better?

my humble opinion = (x number of years of experience + x number of years of education) x (a bit of arrogance) minus knowing that other people may be occasionally correct.

a home router in the $30 range is usually the bottom of the price range. A decent router can last you a few years so don't be too cheap. unless it's a big sale or some kind of deal it will be more than $30, perhaps between $50-$100.

In other words how do I know which router is better than the other?

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/things-to-consider-when-buying-a-router/
You mentioned large house.
How many devices are you connecting?
Speed needs?
Netflix streaming?
Voip?
Do you want to connect a printer? The router can be your print server.
etc, etc
and most importantly: can you install a non stock firmware such as dd-wrt or merlin on the router?

Just rely on if it's more expensive/new that means it's better?
definitely not, but newer routers may have new features that you may need.

.
Would the Netgear r6700 be a good option for around 2400 square foot 2 floor home (eventually 3 floors will be used)?

I'd say there would be 3-4 phones connected. A computer. A nice amount of video streaming. And VoIP.

Im not familiar with a print server. I don't think I use that. I never changed firmware on a router before, but I think I could do it if necessary.

Also does it make sense to say that the more power a router uses the stronger the signal will be? Because my current router only uses 12v 1.0A vs the r6700 which uses 12v 3.5A

that seems better if it's v1. In v2 Netgear removed the Broadcom chip, so if it's v2 then stay away.
https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/buyers-beware-netgear-nighthawk-r6700v2-is-no-longer-broadcom-soc.2511871/
If you buy v1, then replace the firmware with Tomato or dd-wrt Kong.

my old router died a few months ago and I replaced it with an ASUS RT-AC66U B1, very happy with it so far. Recently bought another one on Newegg for a friend for $80.

nope.

on DDMS
https://www.dansdeals.com/shopping-deals/bh/3-keewifi-kisslink-router-range-extenders-just-19-95-shipped-bh-25-price-drop/

is the quality on this any good? or is it a no-name brand?
(would the same $20 be better spent on a  low-end netgear or something)?

Does this look like a good option for a large house

Ended up getting a linkysys ea7500 ac1900 router. Works very good throughout the house.
