TD Ameritrade - Malware alert
« on: March 21, 2013, 09:59:52 AM »
So I tried logging on to my account, and it said I had to call them. Called them, and they told me that my computer w/ ip address of xxx has suspected malware on it.

They told me I had to do a malware scan and send them the results so they can reopen my account. They sent me a link to the following website, http://www.malwarebytes.org/

The problem is that this is my work computer at a gov office, and I'm not sure I want to download this program and run it. I'm also leaving for the next few weeks, and need access to my account before I return.

On the surface, this seems to be a scam, but I got the error message from both of my computers, and I called the TD # and this is what they told to do.

Any advice?

Malwarebytes is a very well-known and reputable anti-virus software. I wouldn't have any qualms over running it.

+1 it's quality freeware. That being said you might have other issues with installing software on work pc due to not having admin rights (i have that issue at work).

You don't have any anti-virus software already installed on your work PC?

I assume that they have the most up to date software due to the constant targeting by foreign nationals.
That's why I was surprised when they told me the ip.

So weird that they would freeze your account because of a local infection.

Why don't you tell them its your employer's computer, and you don't have administrative rights?
Love me or hate me. I still love you.

I did, and they told me to go to the IT department so they could do a chk.
Not sure I want to do that...
