I've gotten the occasional upgrade too...
I stayed at the sheraton at the airport in miami (i got stuck) and the valet whispered to the doorman that im gold, he asked if he could escort me to the red carpet then my room etc. i got the royal treatment, never mind that i got it by calling politely...i guess they dont get to many gold guests there...i could only imagine if i had already been plat back then ;D
