That's an interesting question. I tried to find an answer but came up empty. Give Marriott support a call and let us know what they say.

What is the best way to find available hotels that aren't listed on the website?

Can you explain, why wouldn’t they be listed on the marriott website?

I couldn't find this question addressed anywhere.

Is there any sort of penalization, official or unofficial, for holding a second room with the intention of cancelling it shortly before a stay, in order to increase the chances it's available for a potential upgrade?

I have two rooms booked at residence inn, one standard room on points and one paid two bedroom suite. I'm about 90% sure I'm going to cancel the paid reservation. Of course even if the room is available I may not get upgraded. But will the hotel notice I did that and get annoyed that I held the room for no reason (even if I could rationalize it my mind).

TIA

I only need 3 more nights to upgrade from Gold to Platinum. Was thinking of booking the cheapest Marriott for 3 nights. How can I search which is the cheapest Marriott ? Tried searching on their site and didn't really give me the option? Also, do I need to actually check in or just booking and paying would be enough even if I don't show up? Thanks.

You need to stay in the property as part of the hotel rules. It's also best that you book directly from your Bonvoy account to capture the nights as sometimes, even if you book under a third party site, it may not honour your booking even if you have provided your membership number. Check on Bonvoy's lowest rate :)

Does marriott app not let you use certificate, only if you book online?
This week Marriott.com was down, took me almost 2 hours to book a room (last minute while sitting in airport). Online wasn't working and only the app work sporadically. (actually got confirmation email, after I checked out.) Finally got room but wouldn't show options of certs only points. Didn't have choice as couldn't get online.
Booked with points, then waited another 1.5 for shuttle bus because they all full. Check in took another 30 min because they where doing everything by hand (had to show them my reservation number on my phone)
Called Marriott to have the points switched to cert, and they said nothing they can do as its after the stay......

All this was for a 15 hour trip....

I had a similar problem: I emailed them in the morning and they fixed it late that night.
