MARCH WEATHER Athens--- low 9c hi 17c rain once every 3 days or so -with 3 young children it may not be a "vacation"--- if your were a tourist visiting tourist sites in other places with 3 young ones then athens is like any other place -NOT TRYING TO SOUND NEGATIVE -just my thoughts

Depends how you define "doable". One day is a bit tight for a whole island. Look into santorini. Just FYI there are MANY one day tours that go out from Athens

Doable in my books is see the island and still have time for the beach and chill a little.
Getting to Santorini is a flight or a boat?
The rates in athens for hotels is to cheap to use points in my opinion btw

I did an AirBnB close to the chabad, i think it was called the Athens Boutique apartments. Not a bad place, only had 1 full size mattress though. If you check the chabad of athens website they have information also. Just be aware that the streets are very small and it's very easy to get lost. Hope you speak Greek

Now I've gotta look around into activities.
Worth taking a train outside of Athens for a day or 2? Would love seeing some green nature if possible.

Flight. Unless you want to sit on a ferry for about 20 hours I think

Oh I'm looking for more local to athens that I can go and come back that day.
Do you recommend Aegina, porus, or Hydra? or would a 3 island tour cover most of the island?
I'm hoping to do athens, Rome, Paris and London so don't really want to add another flight.
Do you know what the standard policy in Europe is with checked bags? Are any airlines free?

I didn't end up doing my island tours from Athens, although I wanted to. Didn't end up having the time

I was just looking at the Starwood properties in Santorini and it looks they're not taking reservations until April. Is that likely to be the case with other islands/chains as well?

I stayed at the Intercontinental Athens, its close by and they have free a shuttle to the center of town every half hour or hour depending on the time of day, if you happen to miss the shuttle there is a tram that wil take you around Athens for almost nothing, and its about a block away from the hotel

Hotel Grand Bretagne and King George are both really nice Starwood hotels at only 12k per night

Nice. I didn't stay there as I wanted to be closer to Chabad for Shabbos but I did check it out. Looked really nice
