So why can't you slam on brakes without shoes
When you are slamming on the brakes every millisecond counts...  Your foot (without shoes) will give a little slowing the brake.

Except in OH, 9 above.

I was actually told by a trooper in PA that I should be safe up to 79 (14 over) obviously you always need a but of common sense.

I usually do about 10 over speed limit. Yes it should save some gas because you are not pumping any gas or break pedal.
You should NEVER be hitting the brakes on a highway (OK, never say never :) ) I HATE those drivers!
judah - how do yoiu think the car drives if its not pumping gas?
Cruise pumps the gas automatically, you can actually feel the pedal move up and down.

IMO rubber soled shoes gives a better grip as well.

That site does not seem legit, though there may be truth to the claim as per snopes

I once hydroplaned and spun out at full speed on a highway. The last thing I'd  call it is fun.

+1 A Rebbi of mine was merging from route 22 onto the gsp, hydroplaned spun around hit the guardrail on the right side(totalled his grand marquis!) and started rolling into the 22 traffic. B"H his car stopped inches before! P.S. the cop gave him a ticket for speeding and careless driving

I dnt SLAM on brakes if you were safe you would have your foot resting on the brake and leaving enough space between the car in front of you
Thinking that way explains why you would have no problem not wearing shoes.  ::)
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

B"H no guardrail so I spun onto the grass, not a scratch.

Love cops like that.

My sister drove home in a crazy snowstorm once and spun and hit a guardrail and also got a ticket. The cop didn't even ask if she was alright. Just a ticket since "she shouldn't have been driving in this weather".

Yes, saves a lot of gas.

I make it from Lakewood to Cleveland on one tank of gas when I cruise.

Cruising at 79 I get 33 MPG. Not cruise I'll get 29 or so
I made it from Cleveland to Brooklyn with one tank no cruise.

14 over for me. My longest period of not touching the brake was 2.5 hours at 115 mph(in my younger days)-that ended with a cop pulling me over >:(

I don't need to use cruise to make it on one tank. Also depends how fast you were going.

Lakewood is around 50 miles farther than NY to Cle.

Either way, I just filled up gas today (after my trip from Lakewood to Cleveland last night) filled up to full - put in 16 gallons. (I drove around a little today - like 10 miles or so)
My tank holds 18.5 gallons

it also depends on how many mpg your car gets regularly.
