From my understanding once the car was returned you're no longer responsible, you may end up on the dnr from this whole story but I don't see how they can legally charge you for it.

They officially did an accident report a week after I returned it.
you should've made a claim with your CC company, you have 60 days to claim and then 365 days to submit any further documentation.

I don't know if that is correct.

Slightly OT but hertz is doing something with thrifty and the apparently need all their debts cleared off in order to do the merge or whatever it is so that's why they are following up on all these things now.

I would argue to them that they messed you up by waiting to long to tell you and now the insurance won't cover.  Then make an offer in compromise.

That's automatically admitting guilt. I imagine without attacking you that you'd rather let them suffer the loss. I would call them up asking for information how they can charge you when you returned the car without any damage being filed. Avoid admitting you did the damage but I would definitely not lie out right.

+1 Once they let you return the car without making a damage report, its too late to charge you.
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

but you knew that you damaged the car, didn't you?

It doesn't cost anything to file a quick claim with your credit card insurance. And if they wouldn't have come after you, you would just tell the CC insurance " to forget about it".
I once rented in Israel, and the car came with damage, when i returned they tried to blame it on me (classic Israeli) so i just filled out a claim with my CC insurance just in case they actually decide to come after me.

+1 always the best move, it cant hurt to file a claim just case with the cc.

Yes. if they have to fill out an accident report they must do it before the rental is closed out no matter what, IIHO once they close out the contract that is stating that you and they have ended your agreement in regards to the rental.

I don't think that's correct, and I have proof: this guy

That is the case everyone is talking about. And the wording of the damage disclosure on the rental agreement sounds like they have to fill out a report before letting you return the car and end the rental, IIRC. B'h I have no experience. (I hope, I had some damage on a car I rented a few months ago, but they didn't say a thing when I returned it. Maybe I should be worried now.)

I'm aware that's the case everyone is talking about. And the fact that they're going after him a year after he returned it, is proof that they'll still come after you even after the rental is closed out.

unfortunately, I do have experience dealing with damaged rental vehicles. however, in all instances they filled out an incident report right when I returned the vehicle. That is why I'm looking for other people's experience if they did not fill out an incident report.

Sorry if there' a better thread for this.

This morning, I came out to my rental car parked in front of my house and notice the glove box was open and the stupid built-in GPS that Hertz uses was all twisted around, the bracket was bent. Definitely, someone was trying to steal it. Interesting there was no damage to the door so I have to conclude that maybe I left it unlocked even though that surprises me.

Anyway, I smooshed the GPS back into place and returned the car. No harm no foul, right? But right as I was getting out, I noticed that right behind the GPS there was a piece of velcro mounted to the instrument panel. I can't remember now if there was something stuck to it before. What was there? Anything?

How should I handle this now?

How should I have handled it (for next time)?
