Update: I was able to switch back to the old compose
There is a small box in the bottom right which gives you a few more options such as delete draft (which google saves for you as you type) and switch back to the old mode.

Inserting Image into the lovely new Gmail Compose

I finally got forced by gmail to switch to their new compose, I'm just about used to it by now.

One issue I was having was that when I insert a copied image (which I very often do) it would shrink it, making it illegible many times. I just discovered that if you click the image a bar pops up, from which you can choose Small Medium Large, or Original Size. Probably no one else cares, but just in case :)
